A 24-year-old online clothing trader claimed trial at the Magistrate’s Court in Kulai for possessing two counterfeit RM100 notes with the intent to use them as genuine currency. The charges were read in Mandarin by a court interpreter before the learned Magistrate. According to the charge sheet, the accused alongside another suspect who remains at large, was found in possession of the counterfeit notes at a petrol station in Batu 21 on July 1, 2023. This act constitutes an offense under Section 489C of the Penal Code, which carries a maximum penalty of 10 years in prison upon conviction. Bail was set at RM4,000 with one surety.

Our Client was charged with an undisclosed offence at the Magistrate's Court of Butterworth, where he pleaded guilty and was subsequently convicted. Seeking justice, he approached us for help, and we took on his case pro bono. On appeal and criminal revision before the High Court, our arguments emphasized that our Client was charged with an offence unknown to the law, severely prejudicing his right to a fair trial. The Attorney General's Chamber did not oppose our appeal, leading the Honourable High Court Judge to acquit and discharge our Client from his conviction and sentence. With this chapter finally closed, he can move on with his life. Justice has prevailed!
